JAM Reviews Glee: The Complete First Season on Blu-ray from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

Glee: The Complete First Season – Blu-Ray : Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment
Review by JAM

I had previously reviewed Glee Season One Volume 1: Road to Sectionals using a top five list to share the best parts. At the time I thought it would be an interesting way to share and drum up interest, but then Glee went crazy as the second half of the series premiered and all of a sudden it became the hottest thing since sliced bread. Well, the nice thing is that it is still a show about singing, performing, and making your way through high school, so I think in order to hold to the true strengths and quirkiness of Glee it is time for a Top Ten List!

The Top Ten Reasons to Enjoy Glee on Blu-ray!

Number 10

The Rudy Syndrome – Now I may dating myself, but for many years EVERYONE knew the movie Rudy, so if you don’t you are missing out on an amazing feel good movie about an underdog that gives his all to make it onto the football field at Notre Dame. It is truly the go to movie for underdog comparisons, and Glee is kind of the poster child for underdogs today. A glee club down on its luck rescued by Spanish teacher looking for a way to relive his past, taking a group of outsiders, adding the popular who become outsiders, fighting with the popular Cheerios, and trying to make their way into the promised land of the glee choir Regionals.

Number 9

Jane Lynch – When I was able to review the release of the first half of the Glee season, the Road to Sectionals, I really did not find the Jane Lynch character to be a strength in my mind. I mean, she was a conniving behind the scenes manipulator throughout the season, but I think I needed to see a little humanity to realize how good she was. The character of Sue is actually an essential part who has some great episodes in the set including “Wheels” where we get the opportunity to see a little into Sue’s background and “The Power of Madonna” in which we get to see Sue let her hair down some.

Number 8

The music – As much as Glee is treading the mainly unknown waters of musical television, they made sure to have really good guides through the unknown. Music from classic bands such as Queen (“Somebody to Love”) and Journey (“Don’t Stop Believin’”) and current superstars such as Carrie Underwood (“Last Name”) and Rihanna (“Take a Bow”) keeps this show relevant, current, and different all at the same time. The cast truly make the songs their own while keeping a strong backbone that forces us back for more. Much of this part came from the first half review, but it holds true for the entire season as well. Madonna’s entire catalog was provided to the show, and led to an entire Madonna themed episode. Averaging about five songs for the first half of the season and eight for the second half meant that there were a lot of songs used by a lot of current and classic artists.

Number 7

The rivalries – The Cheerios versus the Gleeks. Will versus Sue. Will versus Bryan Ryan. The Gleeks versus the football team. New Directions versus Vocal Adrenaline versus Aural Intensity. All in all, the show is often about competition between people, groups, or schools. And it should be since it is about the quest for Regionals.

Number 6

The Quest – The quest is that thing that we all aspire to, for the Glee club it is all about respect, Regionals, and rivalries. Really, it all comes down to the quest to be the best at Regionals, but they are searching for respect in their own school. Even having popular kids join the Glee club does not raise their respect factor, but rather drags the popular kids down to the Glee club level. The rivalries can be considered the speed bumps of the quest, impeding or trying to derail the quest. The Glee kids and Will deal well with the rivalries that stand in their way and so the quest continues, running the road to Regionals.

Number 5

The memories – Everyone has them… Remember when you were back in high school? Unless you’re there now or going to be, everyone remembers something they wanted to take part in or change if they had a second chance. Whether it is a personal moment that you wished you could have back, an athletic competition you could have pushed more in, or a club or group you could have joined Glee is like the second chance to relive your high school time. So this is the chance to live vicariously through a cast of characters that are willing to share their time on our television.

Number 4

Blu-ray! – Everything is better on Blu-ray, especially a show that prides itself on audio perfection, choreography, and visual chicanery such as Glee. Clearer pictures, less discs to lose (4 Blu-ray versus 6 DVDs), tons of extras always included (including the Glee music jukebox which lets you go directly to the musical performances within the seasons and the Glee karaoke which explains itself), and the joy of the Blu-ray high definition experience make the Glee Blu-ray set the perfect purchase for any Gleek or Cheerio. Blu-ray is the technology that everyone seems to aspire to now, so aspire alongside the cast of Glee!

Number 3

The Broadway stars – Neil Patrick Harris, Kristen Chenoweth, and Idina Menzel are all masters of their craft and all small essential characters in the life of the Gleeks. Will’s archrival, Will’s former crush, and Rachel’s long lost biological mother are all played by Broadway masters who add to the nuance of a musical show. Plus, Neil Patrick Harris is hilarious!

Number 2

Lea Michele – From Glee Season One Volume One, I would not normally say that one actor or actress makes an ensemble show that much better unless it was William Peterson on CSI or Gina Bellman on Leverage, but after watching her audition on the extras provided, I have total respect for this girl. Besides completely making this character her own, she is a true trooper who auditions right after a traffic accident in which she should have been transported to the hospital and totaled her car, and it seems to all make sense! With a musical theatre background and an amazing knack for her character, she has taken her place with some of my favorite actresses on television, including Gabrielle Anwar on Burn Notice, the aforementioned Gina Bellman, and Emily Proctor on CSI: Miami.

Number 1

The Soap Opera – A marriage based on lies and deception, a faked pregnancy, former crushes hooking up all around, broken hearts and shattered dreams… All these come from just the adults on the show. Throw in high school aged hormones and you include a group of kids who deal with the everyday issues of teen pregnancy, identity, sexuality, drugs, hook-ups, and crushes all while preparing for the biggest events of their lives.

And now for our Glee club press release… ‘Gleeks’ and ‘Cheerios’ worldwide will celebrate September 14 when the groundbreaking musical comedy – GLEE: The Complete First Season– debuts on Blu-ray and DVD from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment featuring all 22 one-hour episodes including the highly anticipated “The Power of Madonna” episode and other fan-favorites. From series creator Ryan Murphy (“Nip/Tuck”), GLEE: The Complete First Season Blu-ray and DVD is pitch-perfect with never-before-seen extras sure to hit the right note.

“The show started out as a comedy musical about the underdog in all of us and has blossomed, largely due to the incredible support and passion from the fans that have embraced the show,” says Murphy. “When we developed the Blu-ray and DVD, we wanted to give those fans something special because they’ve been so great to us. There’s everything from a sing-along karaoke, to a behind-the-scenes look at our Madonna episode, to a dance lesson from our amazing choreographers. There’s even some all new Sue’s Corners which have never been seen before. It’s our ‘thank you’ to the Gleeks.”

Television’s most award-wining new series, GLEE was honored with a Golden Globe® for Best Television Series, Comedy or Musical; a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series; and a People’s Choice Award for Favorite New TV Comedy.

GLEE follows an optimistic teacher who – against all odds and a malicious cheerleading coach – inspires McKinley High’s Glee Club to conquer the world one singing competition at a time. GLEE stars Dianna Agron, Chris Colfer, Jessalyn Gilsig, Jane Lynch, Jayma Mays, Kevin McHale, Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Matthew Morrison, Amber Riley, Mark Salling and Jenna Ushkowitz. The hit show has attracted celebrity guest appearances by Kristin Chenoweth, Eve, Josh Groban, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Olivia Newton-John, Idina Menzel, and Molly Shannon.

The music from GLEE continues to shine with inventive renditions of past and present hit songs including Ike & Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary,” Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” and Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance.”

GLEE: The Complete First Season Blu-ray and DVD is fully loaded with exclusive bonus materials and extended episodes, a sing-along karaoke, a behind-the-scenes look at “The Power of Madonna” episode, Glee Makeovers, never-before-seen “Sue’s Corners” and a dance tutorial titled “Staying in Step with Glee.”

GLEE: The Complete First Season will be available in a four-disc Blu-ray and seven-disc DVD set for the suggested retail price of $69.99 U.S/$89.99 Canada and $59.98 U.S./$69.98 Canada, respectively. In addition, ‘Gleeks’ who purchased GLEE: Volume One: Road To Sectionals last winter can receive a special $10.00 “Gleebate” when they add GLEE: The Complete First Season to their collection.

A Musical Triumph
Television’s most award-winning new series is also the highest-rated new scripted series of the season among Adults 18-49. The music from “GLEE” is an international sensation with both “Glee: The Music, Volume 1” and “Glee: The Music, Volume 2” topping charts in Australia, the U.K., New Zealand, Ireland and Canada. In the U.S., over five million songs have been downloaded, and both albums have been certified Gold for sales in excess of 500,000 units. Additionally, the show’s Madonna-themed mini-album soared to the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Top 200 Album chart with an incredible 98,000 copies sold in its first week.

Tinker Bell & the Great Fairy Rescue: Blu-Ray/DVD Combo: Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment
Review by JAM

“Well Tink, you found something to fix after all”
Terrance to Tinker Bell

© Disney. All Rights Reserved

Curiosity killed the cat, and it can get a fairy in trouble too. Tinker Bell is allowed to head to the mainland with her usual cast of friends and finds another mystery to investigate, a human residence. Vidia was along for the crazy ride as Tinker Bell got captured by a true believer in the fairy way, a little girl named Lizzy.

© Disney. All Rights Reserved

Vidia leads a rescue party of sopping wet non-flying fairies to come get her, even as Tinker Bell makes friends with Lizzy and helps around the house while she has the chance. But an unbelieving father threatens the fairies and their special world leading to a finale in which you just need to believe.

Here’s to a little faith, trust, and pixie dust to bring the magic back into your life! Mae Whitman (Parenthood), Kristin Chenoweth (Pushing Daisies and Broadway superstar of Wicked), Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels), Raven-SymonĂ© (That’s So Raven), Jesse McCartney (Greek and popstar fame), and newcomers Michael Sheen (Twilight: New Moon) and in her first role Lauren Mote as Tinker Bell’s human friend Lizzy all star in Disney’s newest rescue adventure, Tinker Bell & The Great Fairy Rescue!

It is really fun for the kids, and me, to see each of the fairies have their chance to shine with the individual talents. Rosetta and her garden fairy aversion to mud, Silvermist and her magical boat ride, Iridessa and her brilliant blast of light, Fawn and a catnip lure, Vidia and her hijinks and speed makes this a fairy version of the A-team. Watching them really work out of the environment having been soaked by a storm and unable to fly makes this a lot of fun.

HollywoodTeen’Zine’s Natalia has always had a soft spot in her heart for Vidia, the typical “villain” of the previous movies. Seeing Vidia as part of the team, apologetic and actually missing her nemesis is actually a lot of fun. Even sacrificing herself to save Tinker Bell from a father’s trap means that Natalia’s hero finally acted like one. Probably why Vidia’s dolls are in the new sets, and probably why someone is going to have to buy them for the little HollywoodTeen’Zine reporter.

Lizzy is an interesting addition to the movie, along with her father of course. Seeing the human interaction with the fairy world brings you back to your childhood and those days of hopes and dreams. Maybe it’s time to help your kids fill out their own manual for whatever their hearts desire and maybe then you can recapture your childhood as well.

This reviewer can admit he is a sap when it comes to Disney movies. They just know how to hit the final note that can bring the start of a tear to your eye. Seeing a father believe in his daughter and realize there is nothing more important started hitting me. Hey, you cannot say I am not honest with my reviews.

EXTRAS

Deleted Scenes - The director Brad Raymond and producer Helen Kalafatic join us in order to introduce the Deleted Scenes included on the disc, giving the reasons for their removal from the film. Some of the scenes actually add to the movie, yet have legit reasons for their removal such as the intro scene which shows why Lizzy’s father cannot believe in fairy tales from the beginning. It is truly a touching intro that could not be used, but I think was important to include like they did. There is also a scene showing Lizzy’s loneliness even while her dad is nearby, even showing the little girl acting the part of the caring mother almost. Also included are a tea party in process, and a cat and mouse caper involving Tink and Lizzy’s cat looking for a bite to eat.

Fairy Field Guide – a trivia game in four chapters that help you fill in your own field guide with fairy facts. The game is a lot of fun to play, and actually has a payoff for playing. Take a look and see what you think and learn more about your fairy friends.

Bridget Mendler Music Video for “How To Believe”

Design a Fairy House – a cool look at the design of a imaginative fairy house from the perspective of kids and a look at the winner’s design made by their Disney friends.

Tangled Sneak Peek – Disney’s next animated offering coming to theatres in November. This gives a look at design, the actors, and gives a taste of what to expect. Trust me, we’ll be there early in the run to see what Tangled has in store for us.

Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue from Walt Disney Home Entertainment flies onto store shelves on September 21, 2010 so see if you can catch a fast flying copy before they are gone back to Pixie Hollow.

JAM Reviews Prince of Persia from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment

© Disney. All Rights Reserved

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time: Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital Combo: Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment
Review by JAM

© Disney. All Rights Reserved

A dusty reckless young street rat, a privileged princess, and a treacherous ally combine to bring the adventure of a lifetime to a faraway land in Walt Disney Pictures’ Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Dastan, a street urchin turned prince due to the kindness of a king’s heart (King Sharaman as played by Ronald Pickup) and the king’s special insight into the soul of the boy who was to save the world.

© Disney. All Rights Reserved

The main portion of the movie takes place during a Persian campaign against the city of Alamut, a sacred and holy city yet through unseen manipulations seems to a key part of an insurrection against the throne. The king’s brother Nizam (Ben Kingsley) is the cause of this manipulation, and by whispering in the ear of the king’s eldest son Tus (Richard Coyle) convinces the army that Alamut must be defeated and purged of. The true reason for Nizam’s treachery is his desire to procure the Dagger of Time, a magical weapon able to ride the sands of time and let the user relive moments in order to affect their outcome. Nizam’s desire is affect the past in order to change his future and make himself king.

© Disney. All Rights Reserved

Coincidently, the dagger finds its way into the hands of Dastan and through further circumstances, he finds himself running from his brothers, blamed for his father’s death, and traveling with Tamina, the princess of Alamut (Gemma Arterton) who holds a secret that could save or destroy the world. Oh yeah, and she is a little bit feisty! Learning about the powers of the dagger during his journey and safeguarding it from those who would use it to destroy what has been constructed, Dastan becomes a true hero and eventually gets a second chance to save that which was lost.

© Disney. All Rights Reserved

Along his quest, he is helped and hindered by such characters as the ostrich racer Sheik Amar (Alfred Molina), his friend the knife master Seso (Steve Toussaint), and the Hassansin, a group of hired killers formerly used by the royalty of Persia. The trip through the sands of Persia leads to the Sands of Time and a final confrontation between the pure of heart and the opportunistic evil uncle.

JAMS Ink on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

I had some major reservations going into this. First of all, I am really not a big Jake Gyllenhaal fan, second, video game movies tend to be less than good, and third, I was not the biggest fan of the game to begin with. Well, the movie proved that even with such large reservations sometimes movies can surprise you. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is actually a lot of fun and full of exciting action that will keep you engrossed in the movie. Best part in my opinion is a campfire scene involving the Dagger of Time and a plethora of trained poisonous vipers. Impressive moves I must say, even for a man able to move around in time.

© Disney. All Rights Reserved

It was odd seeing Caucasian actors playing tanned versions of themselves in order to pass as Persians from long ago. But, just like in a videogame, suspension of belief goes a long way and I found the characters to enjoyable as soon as the movie started to worry about it. Combining all the aspects of exciting Lord of the Ring type battles, mystical powers of the Sands of Time, and a bit of a love story with as much bite as one of the vicious asps makes this a fun movie to watch and it is definitely recommended by JAM.

CineExplore: The Sands of Time – Take control of the dagger and use it to unlock secrets behind your favorite scenes! Turn back time and uncover over 40 spellbinding segments – including “Walking Up Walls”, “Filming in Morocco”, and “Ostrich Jockey Tryouts”- with this exclusive interactive feature. Blu-ray puts you in control!

The deleted scene included is nothing that really seems to add to the overall movie. It is interesting in a morbid sort of way, but otherwise not that necessary. The CineExplore is actually really cool though, set up to use like the Dagger of Time. While watching the movie, activating the onscreen dagger takes the viewer into a wrinkle of time and shows setups of scenes, commentaries, discussions of stunts, and a whole lot of information that is really cool to see. It can easily be accessed from menu functions as well in order to see the individual portions.

© Disney. All Rights Reserved

The Blu-ray is beautiful with the panoramic scenery and amazing contrasts that can be seen throughout the movie. The beauty of the desert truly shines through, fight scenes are crisp, and Gemma Arterton as the princess looks amazing in Blu-ray while covered in jewels or dust. The main reason for the Blu-ray in my opinion though is the opportunity to watch the CineExplore feature. It really does add to the overall experience of the movie.

JAM Reviews Goosebumps: The Blob That Ate Everyone from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

Goosebumps: The Blob That Ate Everyone: Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment
Review by JAM

From the mind of R.L. Stine and Scholastic, Inc come the previously unreleased DVD Goosebumps: The Blob Who Ate Everyone. A spooky little collection of episodes from the past (1995-97 to be exact) that combined stories that made you squirm a little while you learned a valuable lesson from the participants in the story. Three episodes are included with the official Fox synopses included below.

The Blob That Ate Everyone 12-year-old Zack Beauchamp’s dream is to be a famous horror writer – even though he hasn’t quite gotten over his fear of the dark. He’s just written his scariest story ever about a giant pink, oozing, wet blob that terrorizes the neighborhood, swallowing up everything in sight. But when Zack starts typing his spooky story on the old typewriter he found, every hair-raising word begins to come true!

My Hairiest Adventure Larry Boyd is having a bad day. He’s been chased by dogs, his band sounds pathetic, and his allergies seem to be getting worse. It’s not just a bad day, it’s a bad hair day...suddenly he is growing thick, long hair on his arms and legs. Even more troubling, his friends seem to be disappearing. Larry knows they never should have used that old bottle of Instant-Tan…could that have something to do with these strange occurrences? Can Hairy Larry get to the bottom of this before he ends up like the rest of his friends... hair one day, gone tomorrow?

Piano Lessons Can Be Murder When Jerry finds a dusty old piano in the basement of his new house, his parents offer to pay for lessons. Taking piano seems like a cool idea if it means he’ll be able to jam with his cute next-door neighbor, Kim. But there’s something strange about Jerry’s piano teacher, Dr. Shreek. He is really creepy. Something Jerry can’t quite put his finger on. What’s more, Jerry begins receiving nightly visits from a terrifying ghost who warns him about the music school. When Jerry stumbles upon a secret room at Shreek’s school it is time for him to face the music.

Check them out for your young teens or preteens for a little pre-Halloween fright night!

JAMS Ink on Goosebumps: Go Eat Worms!

Every writer believes he can bring his stories to life in the mind of his readers, but not everyone is like Zach. A typewriter that seems to be magical and a blob that hungers for everything and everyone highlight this story that shows if you can believe it, it can be real.

Larry and his friends find that the easy way out with an expired tanning lotion is truly for the dogs. Are his friends all disappearing or is he barking up the wrong tree?

Jerry and his overactive imagination find an abandoned piano in his family’s new house that comes with its very own ghost. Throw in a cute neighbor girl, piano lessons, and a creepy teacher and you have one crazy tuning adventure.

The Goosebumps collections are fun little niche DVDs to have for a little spookiness for the teen/pre-teens in your life. One thing I always admired about the series is that they could give you a little shiver as you were watching, but it was never too scary. It was more over-the-top than anything, but is a fun little grab as Halloween nears. So check it out when you get the chance and don’t get too scared!

Goosebumps: Go Eat Worms!: Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment
Review by JAM

From the mind of R.L. Stine and Scholastic, Inc come the previously unreleased DVD Goosebumps: Go Eat Worms! A spooky little collection of episodes from the past (1996 to be exact) that combined stories that made you squirm a little while you learned a valuable lesson from the participants in the story. Three episodes are included with the official Fox synopses included below.

Go Eat Worms! Todd Bastrow is obsessed with worms. He loves to carry them around and torture his sister with them, dropping them into her long hair. That is, until Todd’s worms start playing tricks on their own. Suddenly, worms are making appearances in the most unlikely places - in his bed, in his homework, and - worst of all - in his spaghetti! It’s enough to make you squirm!

Bad Hare Day “Pick a card, any card,” says Tim Swanson, an amateur magician who loves to perform magic tricks, especially before an enthusiastic audience. Someday, Tim hopes to be a real magician, as good as his idol, Amaz-O. But when Tim goes to Amaz-O’s magic show and participates in a disappearing act, he decides his hero is a total jerk! Tim steals Amaz-O’s secret bag of tricks. But he gets more than he bargained for - Amaz-O’s bag of tricks if full of live fluttering doves, hissing snakes...and one very angry rabbit!

Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes Joe Burton’s dad loves tacky lawn ornaments - pink flamingos, plaster skunks, cement angels - nothing is too ridiculous for his yard. But, when Mr. Burton brings home two hideous lawn gnomes with tall, pointy hats and evil grins, it’s not just embarrassing, it’s spooky. Late at night, there’s creeping in the garden and eerie sounds - could those ugly lawn gnomes be alive?

Check them out for your young teens or preteens for a little pre-Halloween fright night!

JAMS Ink on Goosebumps: Go Eat Worms!

An obsession with worms and tormenting his sister backfires on Todd, our antoganist in the first episode. Thank goodness for little sisters and their science projects. But watch out for the minnows!

Tim and his sister sneak out to see a magic show where not everything is truly what it seems. Evil rabbits, heroes who may be jerks yet may be heroes, and true magic combine to make this one show that Tim may be sorry that he didn’t miss.

Joe and his family are tormented by their next door neighbor until his father brings home two lawn gnomes. Suddenly mischief happens, trouble ensues, and things may just get a little magical at the end.

Worms, rabbits, and gnomes, oh my! This is a fun little collection released to DVD just in time for those teens/pre-teens that want to prep themselves for a scary little holiday we call All Hallow’s Eve, or Halloween if you’d like. Grab a copy and enjoy the over-the-top fun chills that may ensue as you take a walk down R.L. Stine’s lane.

Shaun the Sheep: Party Animals: Lionsgate and HIT Entertainment
Review by JAM

Shaun the Sheep joins us again as Party Animals hits the shelves. Continuing a solid trend of each new release outselling the previous, Party Animals brings more antics, mayhem, and fun to our television screens. This is the first DVD released from the second series of Shaun the Sheep and contains a fun costume party, a devious cat, and a disappearing toupee. Check out the official synopses and episode guide from Lionsgate and HIT Entertainment below.

There’s no disguising the fun with Shaun the Sheep™ and his barnyard buddies in this party-fest of wild antics from the Oscar®-winning creators of “Wallace and Gromit™”. The farm is once again party central as Shaun, Bitzer, Timmy and those Naughty Pigs cause all sorts of mayhem, from flying cue balls and pillow fights to nights of disguise and intrigue. Grab your invitation to laughter for some sheep-herding mayhem that’s sure to rock the flock!

Episodes include:
• “Party Animals” - The farmer throws a costume party for his birthday. When Bitzer loses all the invitations, Shaun saves the day again. Disguised in their own ingenious costumes, the sheep stand in as the guests. But can they fool the Farmer into believing he is surrounded by his friends?

• “Double Trouble” - A bored Shaun dresses up as the Farmer to entertain the flock. Realizing he now has the power to boss Bitzer around; Shaun takes the opportunity to throw a party for the flock. All goes according to plan until Bitzer puts two and two together. Then Shaun encounters the real Farmer...

• “Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow” - The Farmer is preparing for a date! He wants to look his best so it’s time to dust off his prized hairpiece. Shaun can’t resist trying the wig on but loses it while showing off to the flock. The race is on as Shaun and Bitzer try to return the wig in time for the Farmer’s big night.

• “Pig Swill Fly” - The farm is looking spotless and everyone is on their best behavior when the dreaded farm inspector pays a visit. While the Inspector checks out the inside of the farmhouse, war breaks out in the field between the sheep and the pigs. Can Bitzer prevent the Inspector from noticing as the chaos escalates outside?

• “Operation Pidsley” - While the Farmer is away, the sheep sneak into the farmhouse for a party. But when Pidsley snaps a photograph of the fun and games, Shaun and Bitzer need to catch the malicious cat before he can show the incriminating evidence to the Farmer.

• “Shaun Goes Potty” - The farm receives a delivery of a brand new pool table. Before the Farmer can take it indoors, Bitzer and the flock have a game with disastrous consequences. They must repair the damage before the Farmer finds out!

• “Strictly No Dancing” – The press release lists another episode here, but this is the one that actually is listed and shown on the DVD. It involves the Farmer finding an old phonograph and using Pidsley as a dance partner, much to the dismay of the sheep who cannot sleep. Shaun arrives at an ingenious solution (after multiple previous tries) and finally gets to sleep.

Bonus Features include “Timmy’s Tune” and insight into “Building A Pig”.

JAMS Ink on Shaun the Sheep: Party Animals

This is another fun entry in the Shaun the Sheep DVD releases that the kids loved. Pidsley the cat is another nemesis for Shaun to deal with in a couple of episodes that adds to the farmyard shenanigans.

Bonus Features:
Timmy’s Tune – a cute little ditty with a bunch of small farmyard animals
Building a Pig – a modeling short on building a pig from modeling clay

Shawn the Sheep, from the creators of Wallace and Gromit, provides amazing entertainment during short skits, without the use of true voice work, and yet the kids are captivated and entranced by the magic Shawn provides. Pick up a copy and you will agree that it is Not Baaaaaa-d.

JAM Reviews Strawberry Shortcake: The Glimmerberry Ball Movie from American Greetings & 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

Strawberry Shortcake: The Glimmerberry Ball Movie: Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and American Greetings
Review by JAM

Wintertime is coming and the gang is getting ready for the appearance of the Glimmerberrys! Join Strawberry and her friends in this new CGI adventure as presents are exchanged, Glimmerberry lanterns are carved, and a ball is prepared for. As usual with our fruity friends disputes happen, circumstances intervene, but they all come together to learn important lessons about friendship and respect.

Check out the issues with re-gifting and their fight against nature (also known as chipmunks) as highlights from this movie.

JAMS Ink on Strawberry Shortcake: The Glimmerberry Ball Movie

I enjoy watching the CGI Shortcakes with my little girls because it is kind of fun seeing the updates through the years. Kind of like the newest Justice League animation from a couple years back compared to my memories of the Super Friends cartoons, the Strawberry updates are fun to see. This one is good for my girls at least in talking about sharing, respecting one another, and with working together (which seems to be a common theme in the majority of Strawberry Shortcake movies.

Another reason they loved it was the dress-up gowns. Girls love pretty gowns, and this movie was no different. It really is such a good way to teach life lessons while enjoying the magic of CGI animation.

JAM Reviews Strawberry Shortcake: Berrywood Here We Come from American Greetings & 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

Strawberry Shortcake: Berrywood Here We Come: Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and American Greetings
Review by JAM

Take a trip to Berrywood with Strawberry Shortcake and her friends to see an old friend. Limelight, an old friend, has now become a movie star in Berrywood in the minds of her friends. But they see that everything is not all glitz and glamour, until friendship saves the day. Then the girls bring back the Berrywood experience and work together on re-opening a local theater so they make a movie for their friends. But the Pieman has different ideas that lead to turmoil and dissension. But the friends finally remember that talking things out can help solve problems and lead to teamwork to save the day.

Strawberry Shortcake: Berrywood Here We Come is a good reminder of the power of teamwork and friendship for young girls and Strawberry Shortcake fans alike.

JAMS Ink on Strawberry Shortcake: Berrywood Here We Come

This one is a little two episode pack that has a good focus on remembering friendship, teamwork, and that everyone is important when they are working together. It is a fun little trip to a little bit of Hollywood for your young girls watching Strawberry Shortcake and her friends making some movie magic.

Seeing Limelight and the dangers of Berrywood affecting friendships is real for our kids no matter the location. So it is good to see the resolution and realization that friendship is one of the strongest bonds a person can have.

JAM Reviews Marmaduke from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

Marmaduke: Blu-Ray/DVD Combo: Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment
Review by JAM

Take one big dog, a family in transition, and a brand new home and then stir, shake, and pour it all out and you get the family comedy Marmaduke from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Phil Winslow (Lee Pace) is a man trying to get ahead in the world while trying to do his best for his wife Debbie (Judy Greer) and kids Barbara (Caroline Sunshine), Brian (Finley Jacobsen), and baby Sarah. Oh yeah, cannot forget the family pets Carlos the cat (voiced by George Lopez) and the Great Dane himself Marmaduke (voiced by Owen Wilson). Taking a new job on the West Coast to give his family more leads to adventures galore with the family and especially Marmaduke as everyone discovers that fitting in is often the hardest thing to do and sometimes we need to take the time to talk to the ones we love.

Marmaduke’s adventures involve the usual making new friends, investigating his new environment, and getting in heaps of trouble. Keep an eye out for surfing competitions, junkyard dogs, and women troubles as Marmaduke rules the roost in this fun family comedy. Oh yeah, and watch out for the dog farts!

Marmaduke employs the awesome vocal talents of a Hollywood who’s who from Owen and George mentioned above to hip young stars like Emma Stone and Fergie to comedy heavyweights the Wayans brothers (Marlon and Damon) to Hollywood veterans Sam Elliot and Kiefer Sutherland. Put it all together and it makes for a movie without high expectations but with some excellent lessons to share.

JAMS Ink on Marmaduke

At first glance, this movie looks to be one of the “I’ll rent it for the kids, but I really don’t want to watch it” flicks, and I really cannot argue with that perception. I felt the same way when I started watching and then I realized that as much as it is a kid flick with some flatulent humor, it does have a family story at the core of it. The idea of a father trying his best for his family but never really asking what they need runs to the core of our daily lives oftentimes. I know I would sacrifice anything in the world for my family, but I also know I don’t always listen as well as I should. Sometimes a dog-farting comedy is needed to remind us of that.

Count me as one of the big Owen Wilson fans, whether as a voiceover or a comedic actor in a number of my favorite movies. Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Knights with Jackie Chan are two movies I can watch any day of the week, Cars is a great one for me and the kids, and the mini parts in the Night at the Museum movies make him fun to watch. This one is not going to go to the top of my list for him though, but the kids may want to watch again.

For all the reviews that have really attacked this movie, the only review that counts for me is the review of HollywoodTeenZine’s Junior Reporter Natalia. If a little kid can enjoy it and not worry about the subtle nuances, plot issues, and acting abilities of animated animals, then who am I to judge it overall. This movie was made to entertain, and it entertains the people it needs to.

This movie is not one of the all-time cinematic achievements that needs to be seen on Blu-ray, so the real reason for the Blu-ray copy is the extra extras. Once again, since this film is really for the little kids in your life the extras are geared towards the little ones. From the surfing dogs in Cowabarka to the gag reel to the puppy and kitty home movies, the extras add a little bit of fun to the pot for the kids, and some for the adults too. For me, the surfing dogs setup was really kind of cool to see.

Marmaduke from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment slams, crashes, and slobbers its way onto store shelves on August 31, 2010 so grab a copy and see who really let the dogs out!

JAM Reviews Thomas & Friends: Misty Island Rescue from Lionsgate/HIT Entertainment

Thomas & Friends: Misty Island Rescue: Blu-Ray/DVD: Lionsgate/HIT Entertainment
Review by JAM

Thomas makes his way down the tracks in a brand new movie adventure Misty Island Rescue. This marks Thomas’ first offering on Blu-ray alongside the DVD release and is filled with new friends and new adventures for our favorite engine Thomas. After helping with building the new Sodor Search and Rescue Center and helping a friend in need, Thomas is given a trip to the Mainland. As always, things do not go exactly as planned and Thomas finds himself adrift at sea until landing on Misty Island. New friends Bash, Dash, and Ferdinand try to help Thomas find a way home while Sir Topham Hatt searches the seas on a new friend Captain trying to find Thomas. Watch as Thomas learns more about his new friends and the island they reside upon, and works on finding his way back home.

Thomas’ release on Blu-ray technology will showcase the CG animation like never before, and is a great find for those families looking to add Preschool fun to their Blu-ray collections.
