JAM Reviews Wishbone from Lionsgate/HIT Entertainment

Wishbone: Lionsgate/HIT Entertainment
Review by JAM

Take a little dog with a big imagination, a number of classic books, and life’s lessons learned from a family’s perspective and you have the amazing Wishbone. From Robin Hood to the Hunchback from Notre Dame, Don Quixote to the Journey to the Center of the Earth, Wishbone find himself in the craziest of situations that help convey the life lessons his family in the real world learn at the same time. The perfect perspective for the preschooler in all of us, Wishbone delivers insight in a way we could all use.

JAMS Ink on Wishbone

Puppy cuteness and life lessons go so well together. This DVD has been watched so many times that it feels like I may wear out this copy. The interconnection of the classic stories merged with the real-life situations Wishbone’s family finds itself in works well in keeping the attention of those hard to please preschoolers. So I recommend you grab a copy for the little ones in your life because that cute little puppy will share lessons of friendship, family, and fun with your family as well.

Episodes include:
Paw Prints of Thieves (Robin Hood)
Hot Diggety Dawg (Journey to the Center of the Earth)
The Impawssible Dream (Don Quixote)
Hunchdog of Notre Dame (Hunchback of Notre Dame)

Bonus Features

“Tail Ends” Behind the Scenes Footage of the following:

JAM Reviews Unstoppable from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

Unstoppable: Blu-Ray and Digital Combo: Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment
Review by JAM

What do you get when you release a runaway train, take an experienced engineer and a young buck conductor straight out of training, a couple of cut corners, and a heavy special effects budget? You get Unstoppable starring Denzel Washington, Chris Pine, and Rosario Dawson.

Made in the Hollywood blockbuster way with the respectability that comes with any Denzel Washington movie, Unstoppable is the kind of movie that is based in facts with just enough extra thrown in to make ninety minutes of your time fly by without you knowing. And the facts of the matter are that someone did something really stupid and they got to make an exciting movie about it. A freight train is moved around and released through human error. This time bomb of a train is filled with toxic chemicals heading for civilization and those in power want to keep things quiet even as anything they try to do to stop it fails completely. Only through the heroism of the “never say quit” yardmaster (Dawson), the grizzled veteran who is being pushed out (Washington), and the fresh rookie straight out of school (Pine) can save lives, property, and give the expected ending to a thriller like this.

JAMS Ink on Unstoppable

Denzel Washington and the action thriller have been a match made in box-office heaven for some time, and Unstoppable is truly no different. An energetic blast through Middle America scenery, you feel as if the train is moving beneath you and you feel as if your town is going to get hit. It holds your attention and makes you grab your seat as you enjoy the “joyride” on the train.

I was told by a close friend that the actors in this movie are “yummy”. I guess that would be another reason for seeing this movie, especially for the female portion of the population. Denzel and Chris Pine can strongly appeal to the female demographic while the action and explosions will pull in the males. So it has something for everybody, so grab a copy!

Blu-ray discs are often great for the extras added or for the brilliance of picture. This one has both as it is packed to the brim with extras, and the picture is crazy awesome on a 1080p screen. I recommend this on Blu-ray for the explosiveness and vibrancy of the movie throughout.

EXTRAS

UNSTOPPABLE Blu-ray Extras:

Disc One:
Derailed: Anatomy of a Scene
Hanging Off the Train: Stunt Work
On the Rails with the Director and Cast
The Fastest Track: Unleashing Unstoppable
Director Commentary Track
Tracking the Story: Unstoppable Script Development
Disc Two:
Digital Copy

The Digital Copy as always is a fun addition to your library, making it easier to take your movies with you. It is especially handy if the kids are running your portable DVD player, so you can use the computer without taking anymore discs. My favorite extra on the Blu-ray was the Hanging Off the Train: Stunt Work. It is always fun to see how things really come to pass in order to make things look perfect onscreen and stunt work is an important part of the movie magic. It is a fun watch if you like looking behind the scenes. The rest of the extras added to the overall experience as well with the director commentary sharing a lot of insight.

Unstoppable from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is a runaway near train wreck of a film that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the action. See if you can catch up to a copy of your own on February 15, 2011 and grab a ride on this adventure.

JAM Reviews Wild Target from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

Wild Target: Blu-Ray: Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment
Review by JAM

Take one undying pirate cursed to ride the waves through eternity, one devil in prada, and one young wizard and it seems you have the start of a supernatural epic. Take the actors that play them, mix them all together and you have a fun romp through the business of thievery, forgery, and assassination.

Victor Maynard (Bill Nighy) is a true master of is craft, the art of the assassination. A man who you would take no notice of, Victor is a man of many talents that all pertain to his powers of assassination. He is the perfect man for the job (if the job is death) until that one fateful day he gets an eyeful of a bumbling, thieving, con woman by the name of Rose (Emily Blunt). All of a sudden, the job is not the only thing in life he wants and an odd courtship starts between Victor and Rose with a little side of craziness thrown in by the name of Tony (Rupert Grint), an apprentice in training who knows nothing of the job he is learning about. Add a crazy mother (Eileen Atkins) worried about her son and the family business, a replacement killer after the target and his competition, and a plethora of goofy hiijinks makes this a fun look into the life of a man lost in his own little world and the women he needs to drag him out into society.

JAMS Ink on Wild Target

I had seen the previews for this one many time in the Fox Blu-rays I had reviewed before, and I seemed to hover between being excited for it and thinking it looked like overblown British humor. But I have to admit that I loved this movie. From the bumbling way that our pretty little thief Rose walks through life with everything falling into place (even the attempted assassination goes asunder due to her perkiness and luck) to the clinical way Victor goes through the motions of his life and his work. Tony plays a fun foil between an adopted son to an implied love interest to a confusing ambiguity, and Rupert Grint does a great job throughout.

I recommend this one to anyone that is a fan of a cute romantic oddball movie or a fan of British dry humor. It has a bit of the Monty Python feel without being too over-the-top, but also has the feel of one of my favorite movie ever Gross Pointe Blank which also deals with the love interest of a hitman who refuses to take the final job that involves his love.

EXTRAS

On Target with Emily Blunt is a fun sit-down with Emily Blunt, but otherwise there are no extras included with this movie. I am really kind of bummed about that as I think the gag reel could have been hilarious with this crew.

Wild Target from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is a fun romp through the life of a man who takes lives. That is until he finds one he needs to be a part of. Make this DVD a part of your collection on February 8, 2011 and live life to the fullest.

JAM Reviews Never Let Me Go from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

Never Let Me Go: Blu-Ray: Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment
Review by JAM

As Valentine’s Day approaches, talk is made about undying love and a future together forever. But what if your life was not even your own, if all you had to live for was not love but rather harvest and death, and then ask yourself if you could take the chance on love like any non-clone.

Never Let Me Go follows the lives of Kathy (Carey Mulligan), Ruth (Keira Knightley), and Tommy (Andrew Garfield), three best friends that grew up in a boarding school environment segregated from the rest of the world with a focus on health and wellness. Only later do they begin to understand that their lives are not their own as they are truly organ farms, grown to continue the existence of others at all costs. Following this revelation, their lives become an inevitable race against the time that each knows will come yet they still attempt to embrace and capture love as fleeting as their lives may be and therein lies the heart of Never Let Me Go.

JAMS Ink on Never Let Me Go

A dystopian world in which technology seems behind our current times, yet the idea of cloning humans in order to raise the longevity of the human lifetime while using the organs of those grown for just such a task seems so scientifically ahead of the times. The bleak countryside gives the movie a retro setting like a period piece from a Jane Austen novel yet I still struggled with the idea of life as an organ farm. Maybe that is why this was so hard for me to watch. It is an interesting adaptation from the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro but in a world of intense action, a thinking man’s piece about the shortness of life can often fall by the way side.

I am impressed by the ability to make Kiera Knightley look very plain in this movie. For a girl who could look good as a man-impersonating pirate, maybe a movie so focused on death even as it focuses on the living of life changed the perception of this leading lady. I could not see the beauty inside due to the disenchanted feelings the movie was causing. Or she just had a makeup artist that could work wonders.

EXTRAS

Very limited on the extras when compared to some of our more recent reviewed movies, there is a strong piece with cast/crew interviews and behind the scenes looks in The Secrets of Never Let Me Go. Otherwise the extras consist of photographic slideshows and fake PR for the clone program

Never Let Me Go from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment paints a bleak future in which I wish no part, but reminds us of the scant time we have and how we need to use it whether clone or not. Grab a copy on Blu-ray on February 1, 2011 and live life to the fullest.

JAM Reviews All About Eve from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

All About Eve: Blu-Ray: Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment
Review by JAM

A great study of manipulative cunning and identity theft was done best in the classic film All About Eve, now released on Blu-ray from the vaults of Twentieth Century Fox.

Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter) is the stalker fan of today when it comes to Bette Davis’ character Margo Channing, a Broadway superstar nearing the twilight of her career. Eve integrates herself into Margo’s life while she even catapults herself into stardom herself. The film starts with Eve having achieved stardom yet looks back on the steps taken to receive these ill-gotten gains. Yet even as the film ends, it seems that the best laid plans may often backfire or be manipulated by someone else coming into their own. This film not only is a classic in its own right, but also is one of Marilyn Monroe’s earliest roles. Full of amazing roles by Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, George Sanders, Celeste Holm, and Thelma Ritter, All About Eve received 14 Academy Award nominations including 2 best actress nominees (Davis and Baxter) and 2 best supporting actress nominees (Holm and Ritter). Check out this amazing classic if you haven’t already.

JAMS Ink on All About Eve

A true classic demonstration of manipulation, power struggles within the theatrical world, misdirection of relationships, and the scheming of a power hungry vagabond all lead to the amazing film which still holds up over time. This is one of those movies that shows masters of their craft honing an amazing script to the sharpest possible edge that then cuts the audience open to the joys of cinema. Grab a copy of this for your film set because this just seems to be one of those must haves.

EXTRAS

Just like in An Affair to Remember, Fox has opened up their vaults and loaded up the extras on this set. Audio commentary by Celeste Holm, Ken Geist (biographer of director Joseph Mankiewicz), and Christopher Mankiewicz (son of the director) and a look at the AMC Backstory: All About Eve give some great back story into the film while additional extras give you a look direct into the director’s mind. The collectible book packaging and every other extra on here gives amazing insight into a film that is truly such a classic, and makes the viewing of this Blu-ray into a bit of a challenge as it will never seem to end. Truthfully, with a movie such as this, that’s a good thing. Much like An Affair to Remember which was released the same time as this one, I am glad to have added All About Eve to my collection.

It truly is All About Eve as Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment releases this classic on Blu-ray on February 1, 2011. This film will take over your time as you find yourself entranced by the manipulations of a conniving young lady. So let her into your life.

JAM Reviews An Affair to Remember from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

An Affair to Remember: Blu-Ray: Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment
Review by JAM

An American Film Institute classic romance starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr has been released on Blu-ray for your viewing pleasure in high-definition.

Nickie Ferrante (Cary Grant) and Terry McKay (Deborah Kerr) discover that a chance meeting might hold the key to true romance. Each coupled with another partner when they meet, they promise to meet each other at the Empire State Building in six months if their newfound love outlives their current relationships. As always, life intervenes and messes with the best laid plans of love and life as the meeting does not occur. Yet this fated love affair finds its conclusion through the twists and turns of Nickie and Terry’s lives, placing the two into each other’s arms once again.

JAMS Ink on An Affair to Remember

What perfect timing for a release of a romantic classic than just before the most romantic time of life. Two hours of classic love story can melt any heart and bring two people closer and this story is a classic love story. Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr spend what seems to be forever pursuing each other only to find life get in the way. Yet that same life allows them to catch glances of each other as time passes until finally they are given the chance they wanted to take to be together forever. True romance, life’s little hurdles, and amazing circumstances make this movie keep your eyes on the prize waiting for the final payoff as love does find a way.

EXTRAS

Tons of special features on this one as the vaults have opened up and shared their offerings. Audio commentary by singer Marni Nixon and film historian Joseph McBride start off the plethora of pickings along with a cool look at the AMC Backstory: An Affair to Remember. For the aspiring directors of the world there is a cool look at Leo McCarey with historians and directors discussing him, the Look of An Affair to Remember that looks at the visuals used in the film, and also a look at the producer of the film Jerry Wald. I actually enjoyed the look into the life of Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr in the Affairs to Remember as well as the Digi-book that was included as well. Overall, I am glad to have added this classic to my collection especially along with all of the extras it brings.

Make this Valentine’s Day An Affair to Remember as Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment releases this classic on Blu-ray on February 1, 2011. Grab a copy and your significant other and let the romance make its way into your lives.
