JAM Reviews Stargate SGU 1.0 from MGM Home Entertainment

SGU Stargate Universe – Season One: MGM Home Entertainment

SyFy fans once more continue to watch the regal lineage of the Stargate Universe, as much like Star Trek before it, search the edges of the universe on a quest for knowledge, a search for camaraderie, and a need to explore the unknown. A darker take on the series as a whole, Stargate SGU is an enjoyable trip through the unknown alongside a group of characters working to find themselves, and their relationships with each other along the way.

Stargate SGU follows the travels of a Earth space crew that was transported onto the Destiny, an Ancient spaceship traveling through the far reaches of the universe. The Destiny continues its travels even with many of the systems damaged, dialing Stargates sporadically for supplies as it continues its journey through space. SGU focuses more on character interaction than the previous incarnations and has a feeling of being adrift and alone as the ship continues on its way. The characters involved seem to be more in the realm of the shades of gray, in that they toe the line between being good and being opportunistic or self-aggrandizing.

Thoughts on SGU: Stargate Universe Season One

I was previously able to review the second half of the Stargate SGU Season (labeled as Season 1.5 here) and found SGU to be interesting and intriguing. The original Stargate SG-1 was a novel concept that always skirted on the outside of my attention even though it had MacGyver (Richard Dean Anderson). Stargate Atlantis caught my interest even more as the characters just seemed more fun and interesting. It is a hard thing to say because I love Richard Dean Anderson and Amanda Tapping, but Jason Momoa, Joe Flanigan, Rachel Luttrell, and Jewel Staite were just so much fun to watch. And then enter Stargate SGU with the soap opera subplots and characters that seem to walk the fringe of good and not-so-good.

Robert Carlyle plays a very interesting character. Dr. Nicholas Rush is an intriguing man who never seems to share a feeling of getting to know the actual man inside. It seems like everything he does has a meaning, but I for one ca not often tell what the meaning is. I will say this though, he definitely is a reason to watch the show.

MacGyver is back… Okay, not really, but any show where we can see more Richard Dean Anderson is a good thing. I have to admit when the original Stargate SG-1 started and he was cast, I was kind of surprised and for some reason had problems seeing him as commander of an interdimensional force that protected our planet. Then I remembered this is MacGyver and he can do ANYTHING. And now he’s back continuing the good work with the SGU crew as well as the General. Throw in some other favorite actors including Lou Diamond Phillips, Rhona Mitra, and Amanda Tapping

SGU: Stargate Universe from MGM Home Entertainment is a dark version of a crew lost in space, not altogether altruistic but interesting nonetheless.

Love, honor, betrayal and more all set against the backdrop of the French and Indian War fuels this Blu-ray release from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, The Last of the Mohicans. Two-time Academy Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis, director Michael Mann, Madeleine Stowe and more lead this beautifully done movie based in colonial times with amazing mountain ranges and populated forests providing the background of this literary classic by James Fennimore Cooper. A love story between two people from two worlds that collide during a time of trial, Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis) is an adopted son of the Mohicans who meets Cora Munro (Madeleine Stowe), a daughter of the British commander at a nearby garrison. Living through Indian attacks and ambushes, battles with the French, and family squabbles, the two lovers make their way through the adventurous times, strengthened by the adversity.

A literary classic on Blu-ray with the setting and environment that is enhanced by the Blu-ray disc, this movie is a classic in its own right but even better on Blu-ray with the lush foliage and awesome grandeur of the mountain ranges. Most movies look better on Blu-ray, and even though this may not have been shot in preparation of Blu-ray conversion (it was made a while ago), the transfer seems to have transitioned easily and the movie is amazing.

This Blu-ray release has a new cut of the movie which adheres better to the director’s vision and new interviews with Daniel Day-Lewis about the making of the movie. As much as I enjoyed the movie, I am not the biggest Daniel Day-Lewis fan so the interviews did not do much for me, but they are insightful for fans of interview extras or Mr. Lewis himself.

JAM Reviews Mad Max from MGM Home Entertainment

Before Lethal Weapon, before Braveheart, and way before all the crazy stuff that has come recently, Mel Gibson was an Australian actor that crashed his way into the American scene through an Australian bleak apocalyptic action trilogy starting with the movie Mad Max. MGM Home Entertainment has decided to break open the vaults and release this classic onto Blu-ray for our enjoyment.

A member of paramilitary type police force in a dystopian society, Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson) finds himself in the crosshairs of a speed-freak motorcycle gang set on revenge for a fallen comrade. But when the gang destroys those Max cares about, they learn that hell hath no fury like Mad Max. Full of car chase action, explosions galore, and violent vengeance filled attacks fill this low budget but well shot movie.

I remember having seen The Road Warrior before and Beyond Thunderdome, but I think this actually may have been the first time I watched Mad Max completely through. I have to say, it was a fun movie to watch and one which I would definitely recommend to someone who enjoys good filmmaking with violent action.

80s movies (this was made in 1979 so it’s basically an 80s movie) can tend to go the classic route which are fun to watch even still or the camp route where they are so hard to get through (like Troll 2 which I just reviewed previously). Max is the kind of character that you can get behind, likable with his wife, cordial with his friends, professional at his job and an overall all-around good guy. But those crazy Mel eyes showed even with this character, and the actions of Toecutter (Hugh Keays-Byrne) was just too much for a sane man as Mad Max, afraid of becoming the very criminals he pursues, breaks into a shell of a man pursuing vengeance.

Speaking of the crazy eyes, Mel Gibson has always seemed to play character often right on the edge and this is no exception. Watching the movie, I took notice when that look crazy eyed look took place (and I’m not talking about the crazy eyed special effects during the motorgang’s deaths. They looked like eye-popping claymation). I do not know if Mel has always been a little off his rocker, but the man could make some really good movies.

Besides the Mad Max: The Film Phenomenon extra which is a lot of fun to watch, the Australian language track is kind of cool. The low budget aspect of the movie paired with the language track the way it was originally meant to be makes it a little more fun to watch.
