JAM Reviews The Rocky Horror Picture Show from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Blu-Ray: Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment
Review by JAM

Long ago, a classic was born in the midnight hours of the country as Rocky Horror time was born. A film adaptation of the British musical, The Rocky Horror Picture Show became one of those movies that took on a life of its own even as it originally seemed to be less than a success. Midnight showings became its saving grace as it achieved crazy cult status with costumed participants at showings, audiences that sang and followed along with the action on screen, and a B-movie plot that has touched millions over the last 35 years, and now Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is releasing it to Blu-ray with an awesome “package” of extras.

A newly engaged couple, Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon) find themselves lost on the road to engagement, as they eventually run into a Transylvanian convention. Feeling like they are walking through a Time Warp, they are brought into the world of one Dr. Frank N. Furter (the ALWAYS amazing Tim Curry), a man in pursuit of the secret of life itself and the creator of Rocky Horror, the Frankenstein monster homage. Meeting many more oddball characters, dancing to more madcap songs, and a return to planet Transsexual keeps Brad and Janet on their toes and out of their minds, just like you will be as you watch this classic.

JAMS Ink on The Rocky Horror Picture Show

I can say I have watched it now. And it was enjoyable. And I can see how it has become such a cult classic, not really my cult, but there’s nothing wrong with that. It is a lot of fun to see actors and actresses like Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, and Barry Bostwick from 35 years ago running around in a crazy musical.

This Blu-ray is one of those that extra crazy sets that will give tons of enjoyment to anyone that is a fan of the movie. From the previous extras collected from releases that had come before to the crazy amount of newly released extras (including amazing insightful photography by Mick Rock) makes this a must by for any fan of the movie, and a definite rent for anyone looking for a good time with a lot of backstory and extra filler.

JAM Reviews Predators from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

Predators: Blu-Ray/Digital Combo: Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment
Review by JAM

In honor of the recent Glee release and the rerelease of the Rocky Horror Picture Show to Blu-ray, I felt the crazy need to set this review in poetic form. I do not know why I felt the need to, but I figured I would let it flow and see where we end up.

JAM’s Predators Review in Poetic Verse

Hunter or hunted, predator or prey
What’s that big old alien going to do to me today
Dropped into a warzone, parachuting down
Just a former Pianist was falling to the ground
Black Ops trained in violence was needed for this day
As many different people were all dropped in the same way

Drug cartel, Yakuza, death row inmates too
All wondering what they’re doing there and what they have to do
Soon they are all hunted, no matter who they are
And they must band together or they won’t get too far
Each has special skills they bring to this big fight
As Predators are tracking them throughout the day and night

Searching for the chance to learn more skills it seems
I’m sure those freedom fighters wish it was a dream
You’ll have to watch the movie to see how this one ends
But I bet we’ll have a sequel soon enough to rent.

Adrien Brody plays Royce, a man out for himself on a planet in which he does not belong. Dropped there with a plethora of bad asses, he fights to stay alive against a small group of Predators out for blood on their game preserve, where the game they hunt are some of the strongest craziest humanoids and animals in the universe. Now the question is, who survives?

JAMS Ink on Predators

Topher Grace. For a guy that played a pothead 70s teenager for so long, he throws himself into so interesting roles. For much of the movie, you question why this unassuming doctor would be included in the ranks of the professional soldiers, mercenaries, hardened criminals, and the rest but he truly has a reason for being on a planet full of predators. Kind of funny to watch as it goes, because you know there has to be more to his back story, but they make you wait… and wait… and wait for it.

I like the ending of the movie which allows for an easy transition to a sequel. Adrien Brody has already said he would like to reprise his character, so I hope he gets the chance. I liked the ensemble cast setup for the movie, but also liked the emphasis that was placed on Brody as the best of the best. I would definitely enjoy a sequel and look forward to the release of one.

BUT… I do have a bone to pick with the movie, and I am sure many others would not have my same issues. The use of Mother F-er for the myriad of times it is used in the movie is really a turnoff for me. I understand the need to show how “real” it is out there, but I do not see the need to drop mother f-bombs nonstop in the movie. Makes it real hard to watch a movie with little kids in the other room unless you watch it on mute, which lessoned my enjoyment overall.

Motion comics, deleted scenes, and evolution of the Predators features all contained on the Blu-ray disc. I think I have found near perfection on Predators Blu-ray. I like the character background that is provided in the motion comics on the disc, both because of the cool look into their former lives and because they are frickin’ comics! Woohoo!!

Throw in some deleted/extended scenes involving Cuchillo (Danny Trejo from Machete) and I am even more of a happy camper. And finally fulfill the sci-fi geek in me with the evolution of the Predators extras and you have made the perfect guy movie Blu-ray disc to buy for me.

And the Blu-ray version of the film is beautiful. It is not Avatar with the computer generated landscaped, but a lot of the natural beauty of the jungle is translated well onto a Blu-ray bigscreen in the comfort of your own house. It is a fun guy movie with cinematic beauty (which is odd to say but true).

JAM Reviews Stargate SGU 1.0 from MGM Home Entertainment

SGU Stargate Universe – Season One: MGM Home Entertainment
Review by JAM

SyFy fans once more continue to watch the regal lineage of the Stargate Universe, as much like Star Trek before it, search the edges of the universe on a quest for knowledge, a search for camaraderie, and a need to explore the unknown. A darker take on the series as a whole, Stargate SGU is an enjoyable trip through the unknown alongside a group of characters working to find themselves, and their relationships with each other along the way.

Stargate SGU follows the travels of a Earth space crew that was transported onto the Destiny, an Ancient spaceship traveling through the far reaches of the universe. The Destiny continues its travels even with many of the systems damaged, dialing Stargates sporadically for supplies as it continues its journey through space. SGU focuses more on character interaction than the previous incarnations and has a feeling of being adrift and alone as the ship continues on its way. The characters involved seem to be more in the realm of the shades of gray, in that they toe the line between being good and being opportunistic or self-aggrandizing.

Thoughts on SGU: Stargate Universe Season One

I was previously able to review the second half of the Stargate SGU Season (labeled as Season 1.5 here) and found SGU to be interesting and intriguing. The original Stargate SG-1 was a novel concept that always skirted on the outside of my attention even though it had MacGyver (Richard Dean Anderson). Stargate Atlantis caught my interest even more as the characters just seemed more fun and interesting. It is a hard thing to say because I love Richard Dean Anderson and Amanda Tapping, but Jason Momoa, Joe Flanigan, Rachel Luttrell, and Jewel Staite were just so much fun to watch. And then enter Stargate SGU with the soap opera subplots and characters that seem to walk the fringe of good and not-so-good.

Robert Carlyle plays a very interesting character. Dr. Nicholas Rush is an intriguing man who never seems to share a feeling of getting to know the actual man inside. It seems like everything he does has a meaning, but I for one ca not often tell what the meaning is. I will say this though, he definitely is a reason to watch the show.

MacGyver is back… Okay, not really, but any show where we can see more Richard Dean Anderson is a good thing. I have to admit when the original Stargate SG-1 started and he was cast, I was kind of surprised and for some reason had problems seeing him as commander of an interdimensional force that protected our planet. Then I remembered this is MacGyver and he can do ANYTHING. And now he’s back continuing the good work with the SGU crew as well as the General. Throw in some other favorite actors including Lou Diamond Phillips, Rhona Mitra, and Amanda Tapping

SGU: Stargate Universe from MGM Home Entertainment is a dark version of a crew lost in space, not altogether altruistic but interesting nonetheless.

JAM Reviews The Last of the Mohicans from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment

Last of the Mohicans: Director’s Definitive Cut: Blu-Ray Disc: Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment
Review by JAM

Love, honor, betrayal and more all set against the backdrop of the French and Indian War fuels this Blu-ray release from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, The Last of the Mohicans. Two-time Academy Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis, director Michael Mann, Madeleine Stowe and more lead this beautifully done movie based in colonial times with amazing mountain ranges and populated forests providing the background of this literary classic by James Fennimore Cooper. A love story between two people from two worlds that collide during a time of trial, Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis) is an adopted son of the Mohicans who meets Cora Munro (Madeleine Stowe), a daughter of the British commander at a nearby garrison. Living through Indian attacks and ambushes, battles with the French, and family squabbles, the two lovers make their way through the adventurous times, strengthened by the adversity.

JAMS Ink on The Last of the Mohicans

A literary classic on Blu-ray with the setting and environment that is enhanced by the Blu-ray disc, this movie is a classic in its own right but even better on Blu-ray with the lush foliage and awesome grandeur of the mountain ranges. Most movies look better on Blu-ray, and even though this may not have been shot in preparation of Blu-ray conversion (it was made a while ago), the transfer seems to have transitioned easily and the movie is amazing.

EXTRAS

Special Features:
• All New Widescreen Director’s Definitive Cut
• Commentary by Director Michael Mann
• The Making Of The Last of the Mohicans featuring new interviews with Daniel Day-Lewis
• Theatrical Trailers

This Blu-ray release has a new cut of the movie which adheres better to the director’s vision and new interviews with Daniel Day-Lewis about the making of the movie. As much as I enjoyed the movie, I am not the biggest Daniel Day-Lewis fan so the interviews did not do much for me, but they are insightful for fans of interview extras or Mr. Lewis himself.

JAM Reviews Mad Max from MGM Home Entertainment

Mad Max: Blu-Ray/DVD Combo: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Home Entertainment
Review by JAM

Before Lethal Weapon, before Braveheart, and way before all the crazy stuff that has come recently, Mel Gibson was an Australian actor that crashed his way into the American scene through an Australian bleak apocalyptic action trilogy starting with the movie Mad Max. MGM Home Entertainment has decided to break open the vaults and release this classic onto Blu-ray for our enjoyment.

A member of paramilitary type police force in a dystopian society, Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson) finds himself in the crosshairs of a speed-freak motorcycle gang set on revenge for a fallen comrade. But when the gang destroys those Max cares about, they learn that hell hath no fury like Mad Max. Full of car chase action, explosions galore, and violent vengeance filled attacks fill this low budget but well shot movie.

JAMS Ink on Mad Max

I remember having seen The Road Warrior before and Beyond Thunderdome, but I think this actually may have been the first time I watched Mad Max completely through. I have to say, it was a fun movie to watch and one which I would definitely recommend to someone who enjoys good filmmaking with violent action.

80s movies (this was made in 1979 so it’s basically an 80s movie) can tend to go the classic route which are fun to watch even still or the camp route where they are so hard to get through (like Troll 2 which I just reviewed previously). Max is the kind of character that you can get behind, likable with his wife, cordial with his friends, professional at his job and an overall all-around good guy. But those crazy Mel eyes showed even with this character, and the actions of Toecutter (Hugh Keays-Byrne) was just too much for a sane man as Mad Max, afraid of becoming the very criminals he pursues, breaks into a shell of a man pursuing vengeance.

Speaking of the crazy eyes, Mel Gibson has always seemed to play character often right on the edge and this is no exception. Watching the movie, I took notice when that look crazy eyed look took place (and I’m not talking about the crazy eyed special effects during the motorgang’s deaths. They looked like eye-popping claymation). I do not know if Mel has always been a little off his rocker, but the man could make some really good movies.

EXTRAS

MAD MAX Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack:

DISC ONE (Blu-ray):
• Filmmaker Commentary by Jon Dowding, David Eggby, Chris Murray & Tim Ridge
• Documentary: “Mad Max: The Film Phenomenon”
• New-To-The-U.S. Original Australian Language Track
• Two theatrical trailers
• TV Spots

DISC TWO (DVD):
• New Digitally Remastered Transfer
• "Mel Gibson: The Birth Of A Star" Documentary
• "Mad Max: The Film Phenomenon" Documentary
• New-To-The-U.S. Original Australian Language Track
• Theatrical Trailers"Road Rants" Trivia & Fun Fact Track
• Photo Gallery
• TV Spots

Besides the Mad Max: The Film Phenomenon extra which is a lot of fun to watch, the Australian language track is kind of cool. The low budget aspect of the movie paired with the language track the way it was originally meant to be makes it a little more fun to watch.

JAM Reviews Troll 2 from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

Troll 2: Blu-Ray/DVD Combo: Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment
Review by JAM

Green slime, crazy vegetarian goblins, a druidic witch, and the ghost of a dead grandfather fill the movie Troll 2, but no trolls. And so begins the quest of this reviewer to watch one of the worst movies ever made, yet a classic in its camp. It’s creepy old guy convention in Nilbog as the Waits decide to do a home swap with a country family and end up with a town full of vegetable loving goblins. Through the use of green food, normal humans turn into a vegetable concoction of green goo or an all-you-can-eat buffet for these little monsters. Only the power of goodness can break the spells and take out the druidic witch that birthed these monsters so stay good and be green!

JAMS Ink on Troll 2

This movie is definitely 80s style campy. It is often so hard to look back at special effects nowadays as we see 80s work and it looks just so bad. But this one is even worse than you would expect for the following reasons.

1. Costuming. The 80s were just pretty bad for style overall and I was not immune from it myself. Looking back at older pictures, I too was a victim of the too short shorts and the striped shirts that plagued this era and this movie. Throw in the fake goblin masks that look like rubber Halloween masks about to fall off of our main villains, an eccentric druidic witch with the style to match her oddball spells, a townspeople full of bad country bumpkin wear and fake clover shaped facial moles, and the workout obsessed sister with full Flashdance garb and we have a winner of a movie… Or not.

2. The monsters. A movie called Troll 2 would normally be filled with evil trolls plotting the end of humans as we know them. Or one angry vicious troll plaguing a small city, village, or farmstead with its evil wiles and carnivorous appetite. Hmmm… Yeah, no trolls in Troll 2. We have goblins but they are vegetarians and environmentally conscious. They are mean vegetarians with magical food, but still vegetarians. And there is a witch, or a druid, or a chick just kind of off her rocker who brought these things to life through the use of a magic stone from Stonehenge. And there is a ghost, but he is a good guy with the unbelievable ability to save his grandson whenever he needs to, even as he often gets banished from the human realm and will never be back… Until his grandson needs him again.

3. Green food. I know this is the way the goblins turned people into their chlorophyll cocktails, but green food and I do not really enjoy each others company. Seeing the Wait family ready to dig into corn on the cob with green goo along with all the other green choices just made me feel a little green myself.

Reading this, you would think I had something against 80s movies, or at least 80s effects driven movies but I don’t. The Neverending Story and others were well done movies for what they were and when they came out, but this one is camp at its greatest. Check it out if you want to see one of the best worst movies of all time. But don’t say I didn’t warn you.
