Leverage Season Two Episode 11 – The Bottle Job: Air date January 20, 2010

Leverage Season Two Episode 11 – The Bottle Job: Air date January 20, 2010

Aldis Hodge!!! That’s right, Hardison (played by Mr. Hodge) takes some center stage time as we make our way to save the neighborhood bar where Nate (Timothy Hutton) spent his youth with his father, and now lives above. By the way, a “recovering” alcoholic living over a bar could have really bad consequences. More on that later.

An Irish loan shark has moved in on the neighborhood and threatens the mourning Cora McRory (Odessa Rae, the future Silver Banshee on Smallville) who has just lost her father and is about to lose his bar. Nate jumps in as Cora is family in his mind and works “the wire”. A con that usually takes weeks to prepare and he gives his team less than 2 hours. Enter the Hardison!

This episode is a focus on Nate’s past and him returning to the bottle, Hardison’s ability to multi-task and flip from one thing to another in a quick second, and Tara’s (Jeri Ryan) growth on the team. Nate is falling apart and Sophie (Gina Bellman) is no where to be seen to force him to pick up the pieces. During the con, he tries to stay away from the bottle but gets pulled back in hard. He tells Tara that his getting drunk will not hurt the team because he understands he is not as good when he is drunk. That mentality is going to get someone hurt very soon.

Hardison takes center stage here as he controls the data feed for the con, pulls the information on their foes, tracks cell phone use to a possible hideout, and pulls a weather report out of nowhere. He showed how much the team truly needs him, and showed he’s not completely on the side of the angels when he admits to using his ATM tech when the team was on their little break. Aldis Hodge and Zachary Levi (Chuck) have given the tech/sci-fi geek portion of the world (which I am part of) characters to be proud of that, much like us, have multi-facets to their personalities and more to share than a couple of computer searches and sci-fi movie references. I’m looking forward to more of the growth of Hardison as the season continues.

Tara, what can I say about this girl? I love Jeri Ryan (told you I was a sci-fi geek) and the character is interesting, but I have a feeling she’s going to mess with the team very soon. For someone who was filling in for Sophie, she seems to have the mentality that she has replaced Sophie already whether she likes it or not. Hmmmm… catfight coming anyone? She also is obsessed with her cut of the money to do these good deeds. The rest of the team has seemed to buy into helping others from the get-go and seem to take great pride in what they do, but Tara’s monetary desires are going to derail things soon. Oh yeah, and she seems to have a thing for Nate at times. Do you think Sophie is going to like that?

All in all, a good episode that gave a back story into Nate’s relationship with his father and some insights into how good this team really is.

Leverage Season Two Episode 10 – The Runway Job: Air date January 13, 2010

Leverage Season Two Episode 10 – The Runway Job: Air date January 13, 2010

This is my first individual episode review of a show that I consider to be one of the top five shows on television. As I have mentioned in a Leverage Season One review on my site, the modern day Robin Hood feel makes this a fun show to watch and the interpersonal relationships between the team are interesting to say the least. The Runway Job is the return from their midseason break, and the show jumps into the fashion world for this trendy return.

Taking down a sweatshop run by the Triads was a little more than they bargained for when they first took the job, but the team works together in order to accomplish it. The idea of a tough gang of former crooks infiltrating and “stealing” a runway show is a very interesting plot point, and I think it gives Eliot (Christian Kane) a chance to show off a bit, both his suave lady charmer side and his acting chops as a fashion assistant.

Tara (Jeri Ryan) has become an interesting character in the mix while subbing for Sophie (Gina Bellman), but I have a feeling that something is going to go wrong with that relationship. Tara is still receiving her cut with each job, and I wonder how long the team wants to keep paying a mercenary and how long she wants to stay on the side of the angels. Time will tell.

Nate (Timothy Hutton) is near the breaking point without Sophie and I don’t think he realizes how much she stabilizes his life. The rest of the team sees it as they seem to call her nonstop for advice and asserting that they want her back. All she wants is one person to say he needs her, and I hope he does before it is too late.

It was also nice to see Parker (Beth Riesgraf) play a little dress-up as a runway model. Her charms as a thief translate in a odd distracting way in order to make this a highlight of the show.

The Amazing Saga of Lucy Schwartz and Her Scientist Minions…

My friends, there is a new artist on the block who has songs infecting our television and movie culture, and is finally about to explode on the scene with the released of her new EP “Help Me! Help Me!” Her name is Lucy Schwartz and this young shooting star has been heard in shows like Private Practice, Make It or Break It, and Grey’s Anatomy. We had the chance to slow her down and talk to her about her upcoming EP "Help Me! Help Me!", her scientist minions, and her EP cover picture choice, and may I say that we found a very insightful, eclectic, humorous, and awesome young lady! So pull a chair up to your desk and read a little about Miss Lucy Schwartz!

For the full text version of the Q&A with Lucy check out http://www.hollywoodteenzine.com/, but for the quick and easy summary follow along with me. Not yet 21, Lucy Schwartz is the girl you don’t yet know, but I’m pretty sure you’ve heard her music. She has had songs in a ton of television shows including Private Practice, Make It or Break It, and Grey’s Anatomy along with movies such as Post Grad, Adam, and the upcoming Shreck 4. She is releasing an EP January 26th with a goal to release her full album sometime later this year. If you want to check out some of her music, check out her MySpace account at http://www.myspace.com/lucysong and see why I think she’s got an amazing gift. In our interview for HTZ she discusses how she develops her sound “in a top-secret laboratory with (her) scientist minions”, joking with us as she shares insight into the mind of a songwriter with a maturity beyond her age. She’s humble, helpful, and hilarious throughout the interview discussing melody versus lyrics being “like asking for the peanut butter without the jelly. You need both if you want to make a tasty sandwich”, sharing where the visual for her EP came from, and a discussion of her EP release party at Hotel Café on Wednesday January 27th at 9:00 pm anyone who wants to come and check her out. So give her a listen on MySpace, or grab her EP from Amazon, iTunes, or any of the usual bunch, and give her a listen because you will be glad you did.

Castle Season 2 Episode 13: Sucker Punch - Air date January 18, 2010

“And if you tell anyone what I’m about to say, there’s gonna be another shooting, but… I’ve gotten used to you pulling my pigtails. I have a hard job Castle and having you around makes it a little more fun. ”
Detective Beckett (Stana Katic) to Castle (Nathan Fillion)

Castle Season Two Episode 13 – Sucker Punch: Air date January 18, 2010
Review by JAM

After getting a chance to see the soft side of Castle’s past last week, this week we get to see a glimpse into the sensitive side of Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) as the case her team is working has ties to her mother’s death. The emotions for Beckett ran the gamut from the desire to investigate her mother’s death to the abject fear of failure if she chose to do so, and Castle has to play the strong one this episode in order to help Beckett get what she truly wants: a small piece of closure.

The investigation into the death of an Irish mobster brings Beckett and Castle spinning into a web of deceit involving the Irish mob, brotherly love, the FBI, Asian infomercials, heroin smuggling, and an unknown assassin. During this case, we find Beckett visiting Castle at home to get support from him and his family as she steels herself to get into something she’s afraid of failing, and Castle promises whatever she wants to do, he will support her every step of the way. It is lucky that he does, because he plays a large part in the demise of her mother’s assassin, though he feels like he failed her by causing the assassin’s death. This is when we truly see the bond that our favorite odd detective couple shares as she tells him she would have had nothing here without him, and he keeps her going when times are rough. Romance? Not yet, but there is a true kinship these two share.

It’s interesting to see that Castle’s betrayal of Beckett’s confidence previously (by investigating her mother’s case) puts Lanie (Tamala Jones) in a hard place as the medical examiner, having shared her findings with Dr. Clark Murray (Robert Picardo), Castle’s previous medical source. The two of them had determined that the wounds matched the case that Castle had shown them before, and though Beckett’s first instinct was that she had been betrayed again, she realizes she has friends looking out for her. It is a further building block in the interpersonal relationships in this show.

The killer Rathborne almost slips from their fingers through a classic bit of misdirection until our dynamic duo realize the killer knew Beckett’s mother had been killed.

May the CASTLE stand strong!

Top 5 Reasons to Go For the Gold (Make It or Break It: Season One)

Top 5 Reasons to Go For the Gold
(also known as Make it or Break it – Season One Review)
Review by JAM

Welcome to the new combination of the teenage soap opera drama of 90210 mixed with the intense sport competition of the Summer Games, with a side of Melrose Place when you watch the parental drama and you have the magic of Make It or Break It, ABC Family’s amazing gymnastic drama. While watching it, you must remember the immortal words of Joanne Charis (as played by Vanessa Lengies) from the classic movie Stick It, “It's not called gym-nice-stics.” From the very beginning, storylines involving career threatening injuries, boyfriends cheating with best friends, lying thieving backstabbing gymnasts, and we have not even begun to discuss what’s happening with the parents behind the scenes. Make It or Break It has been able to give us insight into the dramatic aspects of training for Olympic stardom, in a made for television dramatic train-wreck of a way, but I have been caught watching nonstop and so should you. In fact, here’s the top 5 reasons for you to watch Make It or Break It on ABC Family.

Number 5

The gymnastics – Much like the classic Stick It, real gymnasts are used for the majority of the stunts which gives it the true touch of realism, and everyone knows that gymnastics is one of those sports we can’t keep our eyes off of. I think everyone, male or female, wishes they had a little bit of that gymnastics magic in them, whether as simple as the ability to do a handstand or the ability to do a bar routine like Nastia Liukin. The scenes in the gym and at the competitions come off as real enough to keep this from becoming farcical as a sports show, and lets the drama stay where it belongs in the personal lives of the girls. As a former gymnast says, it would be fun to see more of the actual gymnastics, but it might bore the average person. She also says the show really chose good stunt doubles that don’t stand out when covering for the girls, so she appreciates that as well.

Number 4

Lauren Tanner as played by Cassie Scerbo – Lauren is that girl who anyone watching can see is trouble, but of course no one inside the show can. Let us see, she has been shown to be a thief often stealing for her own benefit, a louse of a best friend who continuously promises her loyalty and friendship, a opportunist who slept with her best friend’s secret boyfriend, and a conniving diva who uses this information to betray her friend to her father and try to steal the boyfriend away. And this was all just in the first season. She is the character that you love to hate and hate to watch, but you can’t turn your eyes away from the show. It will be interesting to see what happens as the show goes on.

Number 3

Working class – Emily Kmetko (played by Chelsea Hobbs) has to have a job to help the family pay the bills and continue in her gymnastics dream. Her mom Chloe (Susan Ward) jumps from job to job trying to keep her family together as a single mom. Mark Keeler (Brett Cullen) loses his higher paying job and ends up running a delivery truck to try to make ends meet. His wife Kim (Peri Gilpin) takes a job managing the gym to help out the coach, but also now to help her family. Gymnastics is one of those sports that costs a lot of money as well as the blood, sweat, and tears the girls donate. It gives Make It or Break It some more realism to show the families sacrificing to keep the girls dreams alive.

Number 2

The parents – Besides the Keelers and the Kmetkos mentioned above, the parents on the show are intriguing. The Tanners are an interesting family that lives a double life in order to protect a long gone mother. Originally telling the other girls that she is gone on a mission, it comes out that the last time she was seen was in rehab somewhere, and she never made her way back. Steve Tanner (Anthony Starke) is ready to move on with his life as he has begun to romance Summer Van Horne (Candace Cameron Bure), but Lauren of course wants to keep the roost to herself as daddy’s little girl. Then the Cruzs are another pair, with a former pro athlete father who tries to shield his little princess from too much and a mother who has cheated with a former coach from the gym. It is an interesting web that has been woven. Just as a little aside, Candace Cameron Bure has gone from playing a Tanner on Full House to romancing one in Make It or Break It.

Number 1

The gym – It has almost become its own character during the show, rather than just scenery. Gymnasts spend so much time training that the gym is really a second home, and it is interesting how the gymnasts treat it. Whether cleaning for punishment to bring the team together, being a place where people are offering up cortisone shots around parents’ backs, or broken into to continue broken dreams, the gym becomes more than just scenery as we see it hold power over the girls and their families throughout the show.

And now for the official Make It or Break It press release from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment… How far will they go to achieve their ultimate dream? Experience the rivalry and romance of four teenage girls on their path to Olympic gold in the original ABC Family series that has fans and critics cheering all across the nation. “You’ll flip for…Make It Or Break It,” raves David Hinkley of the New York Daily News. Who will rank #1 at Nationals and what will it take to get there? Viewers will flip for this engaging series chronicling the triumphs and heartbreaks as close friends balance their lives as high school students with the intense world of competitive gymnastics. Fans can relive the series that raises the bar on family drama, complete with a never-before-seen extended episode, and go behind the scenes to discover what it takes to perform such amazing stunts—only on DVD!

Bonus Features
• Never-Before-Seen Extended Finale
• Making It—Watch How These Stars Balance Acting With Difficult Stunts (This was an especially awesome extra with how it detailed the startup of the show along with a discussion on how much the girls had to train to look legit and how the transition between actress and stunt double stays so seemless)
• Deleted Scenes

Make It or Break It: Season One will be available on DVD for purchase here at Amazon.com and other fine retail establishments starting January 12th. Make It or Break It, a perfect 10 for anyone looking for gymnastics drama!

Castle Season Two Episode 12 – A Rose for Everafter

“He’s all yours”
Kyra (Alyssa Milano) to Detective Beckett (Stana Katic)

Castle Season Two Episode 12 – A Rose for Everafter: Air date January 11, 2010
Review by JAM

This episode finally give the fans a little more of what they were waiting for. Since the beginning of the show’s run, Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Beckett (Stana Katic) have played the game at feeling each other out, but not sharing much at the same time. Castle plays the smitten young knight on the quest for the princess’ heart and Beckett plays the indifferent princess watching as her knight completes greater and greater challenges in order to prove his worth. Funny thing is, in this episode we finally see Beckett realize some of what she might have before her.

As Castle works on envisioning the escape of Nikki Heat from his next novel, a new case arrives for the Beckett and her team. The death of a bridesmaid threatens to destroy a wedding in which the bride to be shares a deep past with Castle. Sounds like a soap opera! But instead we have a well-woven tale of sex, lies, and videotape (or Flip video to be exact) in which nothing is as it seems.

Kyra (Alyssa Milano) is the bride-to-be and Castle’s long ago forbidden love. The onscreen chemistry between Alyssa and Nathan was amazing, as you can truly feel that these two may have had something between them, yet Castle is slightly subdued (for him) as he explores the feelings he has for his former flame and his current infatuation, Kate Beckett. For the first time, Beckett seems to see Castle as more than just the annoyance who helps at times, but rather as an actual man with all his pluses and minuses. Subtle camera shots and dialogue show a subtle jealousy in Beckett’s voice as she sees Castle fawning over his past. She especially cautions him about getting to close to someone who could be a potential suspect or killer of the dead bridesmaid, but it seems more out of a need to keep him close and under her wing than an actual warning.

She needed not worry as Kyra and Castle share an intimate moment together, but nothing more as each returns to their life as it is. Kyra realizing that she has a man to love her forever, but not completely over Castle informs Beckett that Castle is hers to win or lose. Yet there seems to be that undertone of “Do not mess it up” that helps the viewer see the potential for the two weekly collaborators, Castle and Beckett. Oh yeah, and Beckett catches the bouquet. Subtle…

I don’t know if the show will ever establish the romance between Castle and Beckett, but this episode led their relationship further than it had been by establishing visions of what might be in both Beckett’s and the viewer’s eyes. The show itself is fun for the premise, but it will be interesting to see the development of the relationship between two people who may never fall in love, but have a mutual respect and a strong emotional bond to each other.

May the CASTLE stand strong!

Post Grad - DVD Review

POST GRAD – DVD REVIEW
Review by JAM (movie) and Bessie from HTZ (bonus features)
"Yeah, this whole post-graduation thing is not exactly turning out the way I planned. I just thought I'd be doing something amazing by now." - Ryden

Ryden Malby (played by Alexis Bledel) faces a movie version of our current times as she realizes that the college degree she has long desired and planned for is not always worth its weight in gold. Yet even as things fall apart around her, she begins to discover that all her planning on having control and the world in her hands was not focused on what she really needed in life. Luckily there is family and friends to steer her the right way, whether she wanted it or not.

Ryden and Adam (played by Zach Gilford) were the typical best buddies all through school, confidants who could share and discuss anything except Adam’s true feelings for Ryden. This continued even through college and after as Adam puts off a decision to enter Columbia Law School in order to see if her could win Ryden’s heart through his love of music. Problem was, Ryden was “damaged goods” in her mind as she saw her failures as a commentary on her rather than the typical challenges that anyone faces in the job market, even before this recent economic hiccup. Enter the dark and mysterious neighbor David (Rodrigo Santoro) who sweeps her off her feet, but leaves her needing more. In the short time that she loses herself with him, he seems to find himself and heads back to Brazil to be with family. So Ryden loses David, loses Adam who finally decided to live for himself and not for what Ryden may be to him, and gains her dream job, all in a very short time. Yet in this short time, Ryden finally begins to get it, and realizes that everything she wanted was not what she truly needed. Adam was the spice to her life, and without him everything tastes like day-old oatmeal. Cue pseudo plot twist happy ending as Ryden visits Adam at Columbia to profess her love for him and finds another woman sharing his bed!!! Oh yeah, it’s his R.A. and he truly loves her still… Aw…

Carol Burnett, Michael Keaton, and Jane Lynch also star as Ryden’s family that keeps her sane, insane, and interesting throughout the movie. Carol is truly comedy royalty and shows it in the funeral home and at the jail. Trust me, she’s good. And it’s funny to see Jane Lynch playing such a muted, non-over-the-top role after seeing her on Glee so recently. Her character, with her own quirks and faults, seems to be the glue that holds the oddball family together.

Bonus Features Include:

- Deleted and Alternate Scenes - There are a total of 10 deleted/alternate scenes found in this section, plus an "Over and Over" Music Video. The music video was filmed at The Mint in Los Angeles and features various clips from the film of Ryden and Adam.

- "One Day" Music Video by Jack Savoretti

- Real Life Advice with Alexis Bledel & Zach Gilford

- Know Your Strengths: Career Advice

- How Not To Get A Job

- A Guide To Moving Back Home - Scenes from the movie roll and a pop-up check list gives you some cool tips to moving back home with mom and dad after graduation! "Do spend time with your friends. Moral support is key right now." (RT: 2:56)

- Dress For Success - Alexis Bledel and costume designer Alexandra Welker discuss the outfits that were chosen for the film. "We want her to be as fashionable as possible, yet very real," Alexandra said about Ryden. See what choices were behind the wardrobe for Ryden and Adam in the film. (RT: 2:00)

- Find Your Match! The Best Job For You - A super fun guide to finding the best job for you. This feature will take you through a series of questions, which you will answer based on what you want to achieve from work. Based on the answers you give the results are tallied up and the job that best suits you will appear at the end of the questionnaire. Oddly enough my result was "Magazine Editor," which means the questionnaire is pretty on track! If you have this DVD be sure you tell us what you got!

- What Not To Wear - An interactive guide that lets you choose the outfits you think would "take you to the top" and tells you why it is right or wrong to wear on the job.

- Post Grad Confidential - Screenwriter Kelly Freeman talks about how the story evolved from her personal experiences post-graduation from college. Features some behind-the-scenes moments of the filming of Post Grad! (RT: 13:56)

- Trailers include the films "Whip It," "Fame," "Flicka 2," "Amelia" and more

The voluminous amount of fun and informative bonus features included on this DVD makes up for the surprising lack of commentary. The DVD is funny and Alexis Bledel portrays a perfect whitty post-graduate in 20th Century Fox’s new release Post Grad, due to hit stores nationwide on January 12th. Purchase the DVD at Amazon.com here.

Top 5 Reasons to Apply Leverage on TNT

Top 5 Reasons to Apply Leverage on TNT
(also known as Leverage – Season One Review)

Review by JAM

Robin Hood is back and he brought some friends, or at least that is how it seems weekly with the amazing TNT drama Leverage, a modern day version of Robin Hood and his Merry Men in some ways, an atypical “family” drama in others. Nate Ford (played by Timothy Hutton) is a former insurance investigator who has been overcome by tragedy and on a down-word spiral in life, until he is taken by a con. An unscrupulous aerospace executive assembles a team of thieves and rabble-rousers to steal plans from a competitor which are rightfully his, or so he says. Wanting Nate Ford to keep the thieves honest, the executive takes advantage of this small group of loners, and makes the biggest mistake of his life. And so the team on Leverage was formed. This show is one of a small number of new cable shows that have a common theme of those outside of society being the ones that save it.

So in order to give you a taste of the spices that make Leverage so good, here comes the top 5 reasons to watch Leverage every Wednesday on TNT.

Number 5

The theme – It truly seems to be a modern day Robin Hood program with Nate being Robin, Eliot Spencer (Christian Kane) being the muscle or Little John if you want, Alec Hardison (Aldis Hodge) being behind the scenes brains of the operation, but willing to get his hands dirty if needed and extremely loyal Friar Tuck, Parker (Beth Riesgraf) as the trouble causing, master thief but lost in the real world Will Scarlett, and Sophie Devereaux (Gina Bellman) as the beautiful, enigmatic, alluring Maid Marian who can capture all men’s hearts, but truly only wants the heart of her “prince”.

Number 4

The storylines – The extras on the Leverage: Season One DVD set talked about how they have a thief with a heart of gold consulting on the show and that each show is based on an actual con from the real world. The cast and crew make these cons real to us, and in helping those less fortunate make us feel for people that may not have deserved our sympathy and well wishes before. But in doing good for others, they are able to find the good in themselves, though they may not always wish to admit to that.

Number 3

Christian Kane – Every guy finds himself drawn to fights, explosions, gunfire, etc… Eliot (Christian Kane) is an interesting character in that he will not use guns, yet he is the best in the world at procuring items. You believe as you watch that anything he faces is beyond the probabilities, but always a possibility for him to overcome. One of his best scenes was in the premiere with Alec (Aldis Hodge) in which he proved why he was on the team by dismissing a contingent of guards on their way to detain the team.

Number 2

The clients – It is always interesting to see where the stories are coming from, i.e. the downtrodden in need of leverage. Each character each week has a background story in which the viewers are captivated with a need to see how justice will be served. In the extras on Season One, they described Leverage as a modern day A-Team, and I have to admit I can see it. The A-Team were a small group out to restore their names, but did good for others in the process of continuing their pursuit of what they needed, much like the characters in Leverage. And the A-Team filled itself week-to-week with characters/clients who needed and deserved help, much like the clients of Leverage.

Number 1

Gina Bellman – The girl plays an actress who is impossibly horrible at acting, unless she is breaking the law. It is a strange dichotomy that she cannot act to save herself unless she is acting in order to save herself or the team. I would definitely put her character as one of my favorites on television at this time, and the interaction with Nate Ford makes you truly feel for her, even though you know she’d take your wallet and identity if she had the chance. I enjoy the use of Jeri Ryan in this new season, but truly miss the large amounts of screen time that Ms. Bellman was given previously. One only hopes that Nate does not completely break her heart before he comes to his senses.

If you want more information on the cast, crew, characters or anything about Leverage, check out the official site at http://www.tnt.tv/series/leverage/ , you’ll be glad you did. And if you are interested in purchasing Leverage Season One on DVD, check it out here on Amazon.com. Remember to apply Leverage every Wednesday night on TNT!

Let's Grow: Lend a Helping Hand - HIT Entertainment, Lionsgate, and Sprout

Let's Grow: Lend a Helping Hand (HIT Entertainment): DVD Edition
Review by JAM

The friends are all together to Lend a Helping Hand as Barney, Bob, Thomas, Angelina, and Fireman Sam have all made their way to this special DVD. Kelly and Chica from The Sunny Side Up Show on Sprout® join our friends as well to impart the lessons learned from each episode.

Barney and his friends learn that there are no shortcuts to cleaning up in Litterbot. Riff tries to help his friends by designing a robot to do all the clean-up in the park, but something goes wrong as the robot makes a much bigger mess by itself. That’s when he finds out that friends make everything okay and make the work go that much faster.

Bob the Builder comes up next with his friend Bristle in Clean as a Whistle Bristle. Bobland Bay Promenade is almost finished, and the machines are ready to pitch in to finish up with the illuminations (special lighting). As the team works, disappearing essentials make the job that much harder. Bristle, in trying to do his best, cleans up before the job is done and turns the day of work into a mystery for Bob to solve. Bristle learns to work together and ask if the job is done before helping to clean-up.

Thomas & Friends work together in Dirty Work to help teach James about helping each other out. James believed that his coat of paint and a clean engine was more important than helping his friends finish their jobs so that they could all have a fun time together at the Festival. James felt so smart and important until he saw his friends wouldn’t make it to the Festival to share in his happiness. So James lent a helping hand, getting covered in coal dust, quarry dust, and smelly fish in the process. James discovered that he became more important by helping his friends rather than by looking special.

Fireman Sam joins the action in Mother’s Helper helping around the house. Lazy Norman gets a lesson in helping his mom, wrecking the laundry machine in the process. This affects Mike who runs out of the house to repair it, leaving the iron burning the clothes and nearly his house down. It’s Fireman Sam to the rescue! The continuous group of bad choices teaches his friends and us to do the job right, whatever it may be.

Angelina the Ballerina and her grandpa reminisce about a special doll in The Ballerina Rag Doll. Her grandpa had won a special doll for her long ago, which she promised to never let go. Of course, this reminder comes after her doll has been packaged and sold to someone else. Angelina learns a lesson of sharing and friendship that can be passed by even something as little as an old doll as she helps a new girl in her ballerina class. Her doll helps a beginning ballerina overcome her fears of dancing, and Angelina feels the joy of sharing and love that comes from helping others, even with the loss of the doll.

The Marine 2 - DVD Review

The Marine 2 – DVD REVIEW
Review by JAM

Marine sergeant Joe Linwood (played by Ted DiBiase) and his wife Robin (Lara Cox) take an exotic getaway to a tropical resort where Joe can get away from the stress of his career. But things never end up the way they should in an action-packed movie. The island resort is taken over by fanatic terrorists with an agenda against the resort developer, missing Joe in the ensuing carnage, which was the last mistake they would make. Using his Marine training and a little bit of outside help, Joe is able to save the hostages and his wife while eliminating the terrorists in violent fashion.

Ted DiBiase does come off as a believable killing machine at times during the movie and his character seems to have a tactician’s mind during parts of it, yet I did have issues with a trained sniper running through a courtyard taking out terrorists and not taking any visible weapons at the time. Michael Rooker also came off well as an old soldier who was just tired of the career and ready for his downtime on a faraway island, but came through in the end for someone who needed and deserved his help. Lara Cox also came off as a legit service wife, expressing the longing and the understanding when he was on missions, and the live in the moment attitude when he was with her.

Overall, the movie is a good GUY movie, a chance to get together with the buds and watch explosions, gunfire, and a single man save the day. I’d recommend this for the guys' afternoon.

The Official Press Release from Twentieth Century Fox and the WWE follows:

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment (TCFHE) and WWE Studios present The Marine 2 – the second installment of The Marine movie franchise – debuting on Blu-ray Disc (BD) and DVD Dec. 29, 2009. Inspired by a true story, The Marine 2 was shot entirely on location in Phuket, Thailand and stars WWE Superstar Ted DiBiase as Marine recon sniper Joe Linwood.
Reminiscent of the 2001 Dos Palmas incident, Linwood’s trip to paradise with his wife is suddenly shattered when guerillas take control of a secluded five-star resort asking for a substantial ransom. The guerilla leaders begin murdering hostages as the clock ticks away, forcing Joe to use his expert skills to save the hostages from certain death.

Directed by Roel Reiné (Pistol Whipped) and produced by Michael Lake (12 Rounds) and Chris Lowenstein (Bangkok Dangerous), The Marine 2 also stars Temuera Morrison (Star Wars: Episode II –Attack of the Clones), Lara Cox (“The Lost World”), Robert Coleby (The Marine) and Michael Rooker (Jumper). The Blu-Ray and DVD special features contain: behind-the-scenes footage of the climatic fight scenes – without stunt doubles-- between DiBiase and Morrison and between DiBiase and the film’s Muay Thai fighters; a look at the making of the terrorist siege sequence including storyboards, miniatures and hotel guests’ reactions to filming at the five-star resort; a Ted DiBiase profile, including interviews with “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase, Sr. and Ted’s brother, Brett; an inside look at the production style, filming techniques and shooting in Thailand; and, a music video of previously unseen sequences with director introduction.

Bonus Features Include:

Behind the Scenes Featurettes
Village Virtuoso: The Final Fight
The Last Resort: Inside the Terrorists’ Siege
Building a Legacy: Ted’s Story

Muay Thai Fight Outtakes
Deleted Scenes
Extended Scenes
Making the Cut: Deleted Shots Montage

The action and fight scenes make this great for an afternoon popcorn matinee for the guys. Ted DiBiase has a future in roles of this type, and maybe more. Check out The Marine 2 from 20th Century Fox and WWE Studios on December 29th. Grab your copy here at Amazon.com.

Glee: Road to Sectionals Review (Season One)

Top 5 Reasons to Fill Your Life with Glee
(also known as Glee – Season One Review)

Review by JAM

Glee is one of those shows that you either get or you don’t. I mean, it’s a musical on television which hasn’t always worked out the greatest, it’s a high school drama/comedy which has historically been hit or miss, it’s truly a show about outcasts when much of America believes that they are truly part of the in-crowd (not me, I revel in my outsider status J/K), and yet it holds some power over us and draws us in and finally lets us realize that it is really good television. That’s why this review needed to be something different, because that’s what Glee prides itself in being, so with no further ado… The top five reasons to fill yourself with Glee – Season One.

Number 5

The music – As much as Glee is treading the mainly unknown waters of musical television, they made sure to have really good guides through the unknown. Music from classic bands such as Queen (“Somebody to Love”) and Journey (“Don’t Stop Believin’”) and current superstars such as Carrie Underwood (“Last Name”) and Rihanna (“Take a Bow”) keeps this show relevant, current, and different all at the same time. The cast truly make the songs their own while keeping a strong backbone that forces us back for more.

Number 4

The memories – Everyone has them… Remember when you were back in high school? Unless you’re there now or going to be, everyone remembers something they wanted to take part in or change if they had a second chance. Glee is my second chance in a way, as my swing choir time in junior high never continued with my move to high school. So this gives me a second chance to live vicariously through a cast of characters that are willing to share their time with me.

Number 3

The extras included on disc 4 – I’m not always the biggest fan of extras unless they involve a good deleted scene or amazingly funny outtakes, and yet I was hooked when I started watching this set of extras. The Casting Session piece was amazing, giving insight into the show that I had never thought about wanting to know from a number of sides, and the truthful discussions seemed to allow the fan to be part of the magic, and I appreciated that.

Number 2

The concept – A television show about a glee club filled with outcasts from a myriad of backgrounds come together to sing, dance, and make the world a better place. Yeah, it sounds pretty bad when you say it out loud, but it works. The cast of characters are so much stronger than their individual parts that it makes you root for the underdog and wish you were one of them, even if you might not be willing to join them onstage.

Number 1

Lea Michele – I would not normally say that one actor or actress makes an ensemble show that much better unless it was William Peterson on CSI or Gina Bellman on Leverage, but after watching her audition on the extras provided with Season One, I have total respect for this girl. Besides completely making this character her own, she is a true trooper who auditions right after a traffic accident in which she should have been transported to the hospital and totaled her car, and it seems to all make sense! With a musical theatre background and an amazing knack for her character, she has taken her place with some of my favorite actresses on television, including Gabrielle Anwar on Burn Notice, the aforementioned Gina Bellman, and Emily Proctor on CSI: Miami.

And now for our Glee club press release… Give a cheer for TV's hottest, funniest and most talked-about new series when "Glee" Season 1: Road To Sectionals debuts on DVD December 29 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Filled with beloved characters and sensational musical numbers, "Glee" Season 1: Road To Sectionals is an electrifying, pitch-perfect winner. William McKinley High School once had a champion glee club, but now they are floundering. That is when an idealistic Spanish teacher (Matthew Morrison, Music & Lyrics) takes up their cause, vowing to transform the rag-tag group of singers and dancers into champions. From Ryan Murphy, the creator of "Nip/Tuck," "Glee" also stars Jane Lynch (The 40 Year Old Virgin), Jessalyn Gilsig ("Nip/Tuck") and a slew of talented newcomers including Lea Michele, Cory Monteith and Chris Colfer. Featuring the first 13 episodes, "Glee" Season 1: Road To Sectionals DVD will also include the Director's cut of the pilot episode; exclusive behind-the-scenes featurettes; audition videos from the talented cast and the hit music topping the charts at iTunes such as cast versions of Queen's "Somebody To Love," Heart's "Alone," Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'," Céline Dion's "Taking Chances," Rihanna's "Take A Bow," Carrie Underwood's "Last Name," Jazmine Sullivan's "Bust Your Windows," Kanye West's "Gold Digger" and REO Speedwagon's "Can't Fight This Feeling.". "Glee" Season 1: Road To Sectionals will be available on DVD for purchase at Amazon.com and other fine retail establishments.

Take a chance on Glee, you won’t be sorry you did.

A Look Back at Burn Notice Season One

Burn Notice – Season One: DVD Edition
Review by JAM

“I’m Michael Westen, I used to be a spy.” Michael Westen in Loose Ends Part 2

In honor of the soon to be coming return of Burn Notice on USA Thursdays starting January 21, 2010 and the two season set rerelease on DVD on January 5, 2010, it is time to look back on Season One times with Michael, Sam, and Fiona on their adventures in Miami. Take one burned spy, an ex-girlfriend with an ability for either heating things up or exploding them, and an ex-CIA informer best buddy and you have the ingredients for an amazing adventurous spy show with a touch of comedy. Add in a mother with harsh words of love, a brother who hustles and fails through life, and a special GTO that acts like a character on its own and you now have the ingrediants for one of the best shows on television. Jeffrey Donovan, Gabrielle Anwar, Bruce Campbell, and Sharon Gless each bring their A-games to the table in one of the best shows on television.

Dysfunctional families are still family, as Michael Westen learns throughout his adventures in Miami, trusting his friends and family during his quest to return to the good graces of his former spy agency. Many of the old adages come true throughout the season: That which does not kill you only makes you stronger, blood is thicker than water, we can’t always get what we want, and sometimes what we think we want is not what we really need. Who would have thought a show about a spy and explosions would impart so many important lessons? But at its heart, the show is about a modern day Robin Hood attempting to help those in need and defending the weak from the strong and nasty, and as such it is easy to fall in love with these anti-hero characters. Plus, any show with Bruce Campbell is must watch television, so check out Burn Notice as it comes with the highest recommendation!
