A Look Back at Burn Notice Season One

Burn Notice – Season One: DVD Edition
Review by JAM

“I’m Michael Westen, I used to be a spy.” Michael Westen in Loose Ends Part 2

In honor of the soon to be coming return of Burn Notice on USA Thursdays starting January 21, 2010 and the two season set rerelease on DVD on January 5, 2010, it is time to look back on Season One times with Michael, Sam, and Fiona on their adventures in Miami. Take one burned spy, an ex-girlfriend with an ability for either heating things up or exploding them, and an ex-CIA informer best buddy and you have the ingredients for an amazing adventurous spy show with a touch of comedy. Add in a mother with harsh words of love, a brother who hustles and fails through life, and a special GTO that acts like a character on its own and you now have the ingrediants for one of the best shows on television. Jeffrey Donovan, Gabrielle Anwar, Bruce Campbell, and Sharon Gless each bring their A-games to the table in one of the best shows on television.

Dysfunctional families are still family, as Michael Westen learns throughout his adventures in Miami, trusting his friends and family during his quest to return to the good graces of his former spy agency. Many of the old adages come true throughout the season: That which does not kill you only makes you stronger, blood is thicker than water, we can’t always get what we want, and sometimes what we think we want is not what we really need. Who would have thought a show about a spy and explosions would impart so many important lessons? But at its heart, the show is about a modern day Robin Hood attempting to help those in need and defending the weak from the strong and nasty, and as such it is easy to fall in love with these anti-hero characters. Plus, any show with Bruce Campbell is must watch television, so check out Burn Notice as it comes with the highest recommendation!
